When Families Need a Break: Understanding NDIS Respite and Short-Term Accommodation

Respite supports families and participants to sustain caring arrangements
Respite can be part of sustaining caring arrangements. NDIA guidance frames short term respite as time apart from usual care arrangements that also gives primary informal supports a short break.
Short term respite is the term used in current NDIA guidance. Many people still say STA.
How long can it be used
NDIA guidance describes short term respite as up to 14 days at a time and up to 28 days per year.

What is usually included
Funding is focused on the support being delivered and basic accommodation costs tied to that support. Ordinary leisure and lifestyle costs are generally not NDIS supports.
Benefits for participants and families
Participants may build confidence with new routines. Families may reduce burnout and sustain caring roles.
